On 1 September 2026 we hiked from the shore of Wolfgangsee (St. Wolfgang area) up to the Schafberg summit (1,783 m) in the Salzkammergut — a classic Salzburger lakes day trip: walk up, ride the Schafbergbahn cog railway down.

The Garmin track is ascent only. We took the railway for the descent, so the GPX does not include the way down or a full loop.

You leave the lake edge and the grade ramps up quickly through forest, then open meadows. The day is defined by that continuous climb — over 1,200 m of gain in under 9 km is not a casual viewpoint stroll. Higher up, Wolfgangsee and the Salzkammergut ridges open behind you; the summit pays off with big lake views and the option to skip the same steep trail on tired legs.

Point-to-point works well here because of the cog railway: hike the hard part up, train the easy part down. If you plan to walk both ways, budget a much longer day and the same steep grades on the descent.

Practical notes

  • Season: roughly May–October, depending on snow, trail closures, and the Schafbergbahn timetable.
  • Fitness: sturdy shoes, enough water; slow down in heat — the steady climb is demanding even when the page lists it as moderate.
  • Nearby: the same lake weekend pairs well with Mondsee, Attersee, or Hallstätter See day trips from one base.
