The day after we finished the GR 131 in La Esperanza, the five of us went out to the Anaga mountains at the north-eastern tip of Tenerife for one more short walk. It turned into the wettest two hours of the whole trip, and we were soaked to the skin by the end.
From Almáciga up to Cruz del Draguillo
We started just before noon by the beach in Almáciga. The first part follows the coast road and paths past Benijo, with the dark sand beaches below and the Roques de Anaga sticking out of the sea ahead. After Benijo the trail climbs steeply up the bare slope above the coast, the network of PR-TF 6 paths, with the odd dragon tree on the hillside. The cloud came down over the ridge as we climbed and the rain did the rest. Past the spring at Fuente del Draguillo we reached Cruz del Draguillo and soon after came out on the road above Chamorga at about 650 m, where we stopped.
The walk came to 5.8 km with about 680 m of climbing and 290 m of descent, a little under two hours of walking.
Good to know
Anaga catches the trade wind clouds, so even when the south of the island is sunny it can be foggy and wet up here. Take a rain jacket and shoes with good grip, because the steep paths get slippery fast. TITSA bus 946 runs from Santa Cruz to Almáciga.
