We spent a quiet morning tracking a 6-kilometer loop through the Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte, a nature reserve tucked away just a short distance from Chiemsee in Bavaria's Chiemgau region. It’s a landscape of small moraine lakes left behind by retreating glaciers, where the trail winds gently over rolling hills rather than climbing anything steep.
The numbers from our walk tell the story pretty clearly:
- Date: August 31, 2026
- Distance: 6.19 km
- Moving time: 1 h 44 min
- Elevation: +85 m / −85 m
- Altitude range: 531–550 m
- Average pace: 16:53 min/km
- Average heart rate: 86 bpm (max 116)
- Calories: 354 kcal
A pace slower than 16 minutes per kilometer and a heart rate barely above resting mean one thing—this was a slow, lazy stroll, not a workout. We stopped constantly to watch the wildlife, take photos, and just look at the water. Because these are moraine lakes, the terrain is rolling rather than mountainous. Those 85 meters of elevation gain are just gentle rises between the individual lakes, making it incredibly easy going. It’s perfect if you have kids with you, if you're looking for an easy recovery run, or if you just want to get outside before breakfast without packing a heavy pack or planning a complex mountain route. You don't need any special gear, just comfortable shoes.
If you go during the warmer months, several of the lakes are clear and open for swimming. And once you're finished, you can stop at the Hartsee-Stüberl right on the water for a coffee or a Bavarian lunch.
